Bachelor of Arts (BA) Degree in Art Education with PreK-12 Licensure

The Art Education major is a specialized program of study that combines your passion for art with your interest in K-12 education. Through your coursework and interactions with faculty in both the School of Art and Creative Media and the School of Education, you will graduate with an education license that pairs with your Art degree so that you can work in a school setting teaching art. You will learn from professional experiences in classrooms throughout Illinois as you work with children of varying ages and skill levels. Personal attention is given to each Millikin student as both artist and teacher-learner allow for one to forge a path that best promotes the ultimate possibilities of personal growth and attainment of knowledge, skill, value, respect, and communication.

PreK-12 Education Licensure

As part of the Secondary or preK-12 licensure programs, candidates will have (1) an in-depth knowledge of their content area that will be taught in the high schools or across grade levels for the preK-12 subject areas, (2) specific methods in teaching and assessing the content area, (3) other professional education courses providing theory and experiences related to current best practice in schools and with teaching and learning.  Candidates will participate in a variety of field experiences starting in the freshman year, with each subsequent internship building in intensity, rigor and teaching expectations. A particular internship called Second Junior Block, in the spring of the junior year, integrates two professional education courses together with internship hours in local middle and high schools. The internship allows for lessons, activities, and other experiences to be completed as part of the blocked courses and professors of the courses observe candidates in schools.

Candidates majoring in one of the preK-12 Education programs must complete the Millikin University general studies requirements, fulfill the professional education course sequence (see below), complete all degree requirements, and meet the School of Education general education requirements. Advising materials for each program are available from advisors or from the School of Education staff.  Information about additional (subsequent) endorsement options-for instance, Special Education (LBS1) or English as a Second Language (ESL)– is available in the School of Education office and/or though students’ academic advisors. Please note that the Illinois State Board of Education requires that all candidates earn grades of C- or higher in all courses in their content area major and in all education courses.
