Biology: Secondary Education, B.S.

Students interested in obtaining Illinois certification to teach science, with a designation in biology for grades 9-12, must obtain a B.S. degree in biology and meet the curricular requirements of the secondary education program (refer to the teacher education section in this Bulletin). Biology majors in secondary education must take one botany course, BI 326 - Plant Biology , and one animal-based course (either BI 206 - Human Anatomy and Physiology I , BI 207 - Human Anatomy and Physiology II , or BI 301 - Comparative Anatomy ). Students must also take BI 310 along with ED 420 to meet state requirements. Students who complete the requirements for the biology major in the secondary education program will be qualified to teach high school science at the freshman level (biology, chemistry, physics, earth science, and astronomy) as well as teach upper-level biology courses.

Total minimum required credits for Biology: Secondary Education 36 Biology, 12 Chemistry, 6 Mathematics, 9 Physics, 39 Other = 102 credits
3-semester core (12 credits):
Four upper-level electives:
Four upper-level electives (15-16 credits). To count towards this requirement, a minimum of a C- must be earned.
- One Ecology Content Course
- One Cell and Molecular Biology Course
- Two Systems Focus Courses
Mathematics and Data Analysis (6-7 credits):
Education Courses (39 credits):
Student may select to add a concentration in Special Education, Bilingual Education, or English as a Second Language to their education major.
Completion of this concentration will meet the requirements of adding this area as an added endorsement on to the teaching license.
